Good morning! 👋
It’s Monday, July 7. On this day in 2001, at the first Daytona Cup race since Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s passing, Dale Earnhardt Jr. charged from seventh with nine laps to go to win the Pepsi 400, narrowly beating teammate Michael Waltrip.

⚾ Nationals Fire Manager Dave Martinez, GM Mike Rizzo |
Dave Martinez, the 60-year-old skipper who guided Washington to their first-ever World Series title in 2019, was dismissed Sunday as the team flounders at 37–53 in last place of the NL East.
Meanwhile, GM and president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo—Washington’s front office architect for the past 16 years and the mastermind behind that very championship—was also let go in a rare dual shake-up.
Nationals owner Mark Lerner emphasized gratitude for their past success but said “a fresh approach and new energy” is needed as the team inches toward rebuilding mode.
Assistant GM Mike DeBartolo steps in as interim GM ahead of next week’s MLB Draft, and an interim field manager is expected to be named today. |
🏀 Chris Paul Hints at Retirement After 2025-26 Season |
Spurs guard Chris Paul, fresh off his 20th NBA season, was blunt recently when asked about his future: “At the most, a year,” making it clear the 2025‑26 campaign is likely to be his last.
At 40 years old, Paul has shown that while he still loves competing, family life—being closer to his kids after years on the road—will heavily influence his final decision.
In today’s game, the legend’s honesty about balancing legacy with life off the court feels genuine and overdue.
Expect the future Hall of Famer to craft a farewell tour that’s equal parts impact and intimacy. |
⚽ Mexico Defeats USMNT in Gold Cup Final |
Mexico reclaimed regional bragging rights with a thrilling 2‑1 win over a youthful USMNT in Sunday’s Concacaf Gold Cup final at Houston’s NRG Stadium.
The US broke the deadlock early in the 4th minute when Chris Richards powered in a Sebastian Berhalter free kick, but Raul Jimenez leveled things up before halftime and later paid tribute to his late friend Diogo Jota.
In the 77th minute, Mexico struck again as Edson Alvarez headed in a VAR-upheld free-kick delivery to seal the win—earning El Tri a record-extending 10th Gold Cup crown and handing the U.S. another tough loss to its archrival.
USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino called a missed penalty call in the 67th minute "embarrassing," while still acknowledging Mexico's deserved victory and the need for his team to improve.
