Good morning! 👋
It’s Thursday, July 31. On this day in 2012, Michael Phelps broke the Olympic medals record with his 19th—anchoring the U.S. to gold in the 4×200 m freestyle relay—surpassing Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina’s record 18 (1956–1964).

⚾ M's Land Eugenio Suarez, Phillies Add Jhoan Duran |
Today's MLB trade deadline is heating up with the Mariners adding slugger Eugenio Suarez to their lineup and the Phillies bolstering their bullpen by acquiring flamethrower Jhoan Duran.
Suarez returns to Seattle after a standout season in Arizona marked by 36 home runs and a league-leading 87 RBIs, giving the Mariners a much-needed power punch in a tight AL West and Wild Card race.
Arizona received prospects 1B Tyler Locklear, RHP Hunter Cranton, and RHP Juan Burgos in the deal.
Meanwhile, the Phillies secured Duran from the Twins in a high‑stakes swap for top prospects C Eduardo Tait and RHP Mick Abel, immediately tightening their bullpen with one of MLB’s most dominant closers. |
⚾ Dodgers' Ohtani Exits Start Early With Cramping |
Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani exited his pitching start in the fourth inning against the Reds on Wednesday night after six straight balls—two of which were wild pitches—largely due to right hip cramping he began feeling in the first.
The two-way star stayed in the game as designated hitter, going 0-for-5, but the Dodgers ultimately fell 5–2 in Cincinnati.
Both Ohtani and manager Dave Roberts pinned the issue on the 90°F heat and oppressive humidity, expressing relief that it wasn't something more serious and expecting him to be ready for his next start on August 6 at home against St. Louis. | 🏀 Ex-NBA star Arenas Arrested on Illegal Poker Game Charges |
Former NBA standout Gilbert “Agent Zero” Arenas was arrested on Wednesday, accused of operating illegal high‑stakes “Pot Limit Omaha” poker games at his Encino, California mansion alongside five co‑defendants linked to organized crime.
Prosecutors charge him with conspiracy, running an illegal gambling business, and making false statements to federal agents.
Between September 2021 and July 2022, the ring allegedly hired staff—chefs, valets, armed security, and women providing drinks, massages, and companionship—who paid a percentage of their earnings into the operation.
Arenas, 43, pleaded not guilty, posted a $50,000 bond, and is set for trial beginning September 23. | |
