Good morning! 👋
It’s Wednesday, August 13. On this day in 1995, Yankees icon Mickey Mantle, aged 63, passed away from liver cancer. During his tenure from 1951 to 1968, “The Mick” helped the Yankees claim 12 AL pennants and seven World Series titles.
Today’s newsletter is presented by Bed Scrunchie, a game-changing 360-degree sheet-tightening system for a flawless, hotel-quality bed. See it here.

🏈 Packers QB Love Underwent Left Thumb Surgery |
Packers starting QB Jordan Love underwent surgery yesterday to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb—his non‑throwing hand—after the injury occurred on Saturday against the Jets when his hand collided with a defender’s helmet.
Despite the scare, GM Brian Gutekunst and coach Matt LaFleur are optimistic—Love should return to practice next week and is expected to be fully ready for their regular-season opener, meaning no time lost.
On Monday, he was seen at practice with his thumb taped, powering through handoffs with his right hand only.
In his absence, Malik Willis—joined by Sean Clifford and Taylor Elgersma—will see extra reps, but the team remains confident Love’s setback is only temporary. |
⚾ Pete Alonso Becomes Mets' All-Time HR Leader |
Pete Alonso officially became the Mets' all-time home run king, blasting his 253rd career homer last night—passing Darryl Strawberry’s 37-year-old mark—in a power-packed night at Citi Field.
The cork popped early with a two-run shot off Spencer Strider, sparking a raucous standing ovation and a full curtain call. See video.
It was poetic—“the Polar Bear on his own private iceberg,” as broadcaster Gary Cohen put it—cementing Alonso’s place in Queens lore.
To top it off, he added another shot later in the game, capping a night of two homers and three RBIs in a 13–5 Mets rout of the Braves. |
🏈 Sooners' Mateer Denies Gambling, Calls Venmo Memos "Inside Jokes" |
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer has denied allegations that he ever gambled after screenshots of his 2022 Venmo memos—once labeled “sports gambling” and another referencing “UCLA vs USC”—went viral.
He says those Venmo notes were just "inside jokes between me and my friends" and “do not accurately portray the transactions in question," which were sent during his time as a redshirt freshman at Washington State.
Mateer stressed, “I have never bet on sports,” urging that taken out of context, the descriptions mislead.
Oklahoma said they weren't aware of any NCAA investigation in a statement, noting they take gambling education seriously and employ monitoring tools. |
